Chapter Twenty-nine
Maggie was having the best Saturday afternoon ever. She’d just had the best sex of her life, and not once but twice. Twice! Honest to God, what was she like? She laughed out loud and pulled the duvet up over her head to smother the noise of her laughter. And just think, Jack Potts had thought that Daryl was gay! She had news for Jack! The reason he hadn’t been married before was simple: he’d been on the road so much with his work, he’d never had time to meet the right woman. He’d only decided recently to make a proper home for himself here in Kings Melford when his uncle had moved to the area. Daryl had told her that the two of them had always been close; Jack had been like a dad to him ever since his parents had both died when he’d been young.
From the other side of the partition she could hear the sound of Daryl singing ‘The Great Pretender’. He had a wonderful voice. The kind of sexy voice that could strip the clothes off a nun. When Mrs Oates had said that Daryl was an entertainer, that was only half the story. Daryl could sing just about any song asked of him, but his speciality was his act as a Freddie Mercury impersonator. He performed all over the country in clubs and pubs. He had shown her his costumes. He even had a red cloak with white fur trim and a crown. He kept his costumes and props in a cleverly built-in cupboard at the other end of his boat. Give him any song to sing – not just a Queen song – and he could sing it beautifully; he was mad talented. He’d told her that he’d sung at his best mate’s wife’s funeral and there hadn’t been a dry eye in the church when he’d sat down. He’d sung one of Cerys’s favourites, ‘This Could Be Heaven’. Maggie wished she’d been there to hear him. She would have been so proud.
When Daryl had said that he lived on a boat moored on the canal she had imagined something small and poky and very leaky, but Bohemian Rhapsody was amazing. It was a narrowboat that went on and on, and had almost everything a normal house had – a shower and loo, a neat little kitchen with a proper sink, a proper oven and hob and a proper fridge. There was even a washing machine and dryer, and a telly with satellite. Best of all there was a solid fuel stove that kept the saloon dead cosy. See, she even knew that the lounge bit of the boat was called a saloon. She had learnt so much since getting to know Daryl.
The sound of ‘The Great Pretender’ had grown louder. She pulled the duvet down from her face and looked up to see Daryl standing in the small doorway. He was butt naked and carrying a tray. He stopped singing. ‘Cheese on toast and two mugs of tea m’lady,’ he announced.
